Running Kili
eSIMs, for when somebody asks
Enough to answer the three questions every customer has.
What a customer receives
An email with a QR code and a link. Scanning the QR with the phone's camera, or opening the link on the phone itself, adds the plan. It takes about a minute and needs a Wi-Fi or data connection to complete — which is why installing before flying is better advice than installing on arrival.
The three questions
Will it work on my phone? : Most phones from the last five years support eSIM, but not all, and some sold in certain markets have it disabled. The compatibility page lists the models we know about.
Does it replace my number? : No. The eSIM is a second line for data. Calls and texts carry on arriving on the normal SIM, though roaming charges on that line are still the carrier's business.
When does it start? : When it first connects to a network at the destination, not when it is bought — so buying a week early is safe.
When it does not work
- Installed but no data: check data roaming is on for the Kili line, and that the line is selected for mobile data.
- The QR will not scan: open the link on the phone itself instead.
- Installed on the wrong phone: an eSIM cannot be moved. It has to be reissued, which is a support job.
- Nothing arrived: check the order's status first — awaiting payment means the checkout never completed.
